China Gas Information
On July 15, 2025, it was learned from Sinopec that the largest underground gas storage group in China, the Zhongyuan Gas Storage Group, has been expanded again, with a scale of 7 and an additional storage capacity of 708 million cubic meters, providing guarantees for seasonal peak shaving and emergency gas supply in North China, including the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region and the Yellow River Basin.
The newly put into operation Baimiao Shallow Gas Storage is located in Heze City, Shandong Province. With the issuance of dispatch instructions, natural gas from the Ordos Basin is pressurized and stored in a 3000 meter deep underground gas reservoir. According to experts, the design capacity of Baimiao Shallow Gas Storage is 708 million cubic meters, with a working gas volume of 343 million cubic meters, a daily gas injection scale of 2.4 million cubic meters, and a daily gas production scale of 5 million cubic meters. It can meet the daily gas demand of 5 million households during peak gas consumption periods.
Gas storage facilities, similar in function to grain reserves, are also known as "underground granaries for natural gas". They regulate the supply-demand imbalance of natural gas through a "summer injection and winter extraction" operation mode, ensuring energy security.
The Zhongyuan Gas Storage Complex consists of 7 gas storage facilities, making it not only the largest gas storage complex in China, but also the one with the most types of gas storage. The relevant person in charge introduced that during the 15th Five Year Plan period, Zhongyuan Oilfield will also build multiple gas storage facilities, and it is expected that the storage capacity of the Zhongyuan gas storage facility group will reach 19.685 billion cubic meters.
